Bandits Attack Three Banks In Auchi, Edo State With Heavy Weapons Days Ago

BENIN CITY— DARE-devil armed bandits took over Auchi town in Edo State, Monday, robbing banks, after using bombs and dynamites to blow up the banks.

It was gathered that the robbers invaded the town with sophisticated weapons and blocked all exit points before launching the attack on the banks.

Three new generation banks on Poly Road and a first generation bank at Igbe Road were said to have been attacked by the robbers.

An eyewitness told Vanguard, that security operatives, including members of the Joint Military Task Force, were overwhelmed.

Vanguard learnt that soldiers attached to Army School of Electrical Engineering in Auchi, were unable to move against the robbers because they had no orders to do so.

A student of Auchi Polytechnic, who spoke to Vanguard, said: “They are still shooting every where and the bombs are shaking the houses and roofs. Some roofs have been blown off and no body knows what is happening outside for now because every body has run inside their houses. The entire place is like ghost town now.”

Edo North Area Commander of the police, Mr. David Jimwan, could not confirm the news that a police station was bombed, saying “we cannot tell the situation now until things settled down.

At press time, the robbers were still operating with no resistance from the police. Security doors of the banks and ATM machines were not spared during the attack as they were destroyed by explosives.

Residents of the area ran for their lives on hearing the explosions. No death was recorded so far, but the robbers had a field day as they were not challenged by security operatives, who were no where to be found.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Anthony Arhuoyo, did not pick his call.

NA WA OH: 12-year-old girl accuses 85 years old man of molest

The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested an 85-year-old man, Samuel Oladipupo, for allegedly molesting a 12-year-old JSS 1 pupil.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspect had on Sunday called the victim (name withheld) and sent her on an errand but later accused the girl of stealing his phone.

In the process of searching for the phone, Oladipupo was said to have grabbed the girl in his sitting room and forcibly had sex with her.

The suspect, however, denied having sex with the girl insisting that the pupil seduced him. He said he attempted to made love with the girl but controlled himself when he realised that the girl might have been sent to lure him into trouble.

Oladipupo, who is said to have two wives, told journalists at the Police headquarters that he sent the victim on an errand to buy him a recharge card.

He added that when the girl returned, she said she was hungry and he offered her food.

According to Oladipupo, while eating, she stripped herself unclad, exposed her breasts and asked him to explain while her two breasts were not the same size.

“At his point, I became aroused and I made an attempt to made love with her but as I was about to penetrate her, I realised that she might have been sent to put me in trouble. So, I jumped up and left her. I did not made love with her,” the suspect said.

But the victim who denied that she seduced the old man said she had gone to mend her sandals when the suspect sent her to buy him a recharge card.

She said after buying the card and loaded it in the man’s phone, Oladipupo later accused her of stealing his phone.

She stated that the suspect accosted her and she followed him to his apartment. But on getting to his sitting room, the girl said the phone was found on the television and he apologised.

“As I was about to go out of the room, the man grabbed me and pushed me to the sofa in his room and forcibly had sex with me. I screamed and a woman who heard the noise came in and took me to my mother,” the girl said.

The victim’s father, who wished to be identified as Ojo, said the suspect was fond of molesting teenagers, adding that his atrocities had always been kept secret because of his age.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Victor Babayemi, said the victim had been taken to a hospital for medical examination to ascertain if the man had sex with her.

He added that the police had contacted the Ekiti State Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Committee to rehabilitate the victim.

Babayemi added that the case would be charged to court as soon as the investigation was concluded.

A FRIEND IN DEED: I killed my friend to ease him of pains – Suspected Murderer Confesses

A friend in need, they say, is a friend indeed! Call it euthanasia (mercy killing) if you like, but the story you are about to read definitely looks a lot like a case of mental instability. Joseph Akindele, a middle aged man, has confessed to the killing his friend, Mufutau, to relieve him of the persistent pain and agony he was going through due to an undisclosed ailment, affirming that his friend is “now happy in death.”

The suspect had been arrested with a bag containing the skull and other remains of the deceased by a team of patrol officers in the Badagry area of Lagos State. In his written statement to the police, he said, “I am a tout. I live under the Gbaji/Iyafin bridge at Badagry with Muftau. I don’t have a means of livelihood and that’s why I live under the bridge. I work as agbero (tout) at motor parks; there, I get money to feed. Muftau has been living under the bridge but he was always sick and there was no money to go to hospital.”

He continues, “He was suffering too much because his sickness will not go. We didn’t have money for treatment, so after watching him in that pathetic state, I decided to put a stop to it by killing him with a sharp cutlass, so he can rest from the pains he was going through,” he added.

Meanwhile, the suspect has been transferred to the Homicide department at Panti, Yaba for further investigation to ascertain if he is in a good frame of mind, a ritualist or/and a cold-blooded murderer.

Civil Defence Corps Man Dies On Top Of Girl Friend

Officials of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, Calabar, over the weekend monted a manhunt for a lady who allegedly had marathon sex with their colleague, Ofem Eta, during which he died.

A source at 2, Orok Ita Street, Big Qua, where Ofem lived told P.M.NEWS that the man came back from duty on Friday evening and without eating any food went into marathon sex with the girl and passed away during the act.

“He came back from work and told me he was hungry and I prepared food for him but when I got there, his door was shut and when I knocked he told me to take the food back and bring it later. When I took the food to him later, his door was open and when I knocked he did not answer. When I went in I saw him lying unclad on his bed,” the source said.

Ofem who hails from Mkapani in Yakkur Local Government Area is alleged to be fond of having sex with girls in most cases on empty stomach.
A neighbour who did not want his name in print said the girl was among the several girls that visit Ofem.

“When she came she greeted us but we did not take particular interest in her and when she came out of his room we did not say anything to her because we did not suspect anything unusual until his town girl brought him food,” the neighbor said.

He said the girl took away Ofem’s phone probably to avoid any trace because she and the deceased night have had some communication before the visit.
“People from his office came here and disturbed the whole street but they could not arrest anybody because the girl went away with his phone,” the neighbour said.

When P.M.NEWS visited the Corps’ office, the Public Relations Officer, Mrs Nkoyo Bassey said: “The man was enjoying himself so that is strictly his personal responsibility and not the Corps’. Have a good day”.

A source at the Operation’s unit of the Corps where Ofem worked before his death said there are efforts to track down the lady “but for now we have not arrested anybody”.

34 years old mother of 4, making skinny chics feel sorry!

How my daughter’s fiancĂ© bathed her with acid’ Woman Narrated.

The motive behind the acid bath of 22-year-old Chika Egbo by her estranged lover, David Sulaimon, remains elusive, but one thing is sure, the victim may not remain the same again.

Chika is a student of the Enugu State College of Education.

Last Tuesday, when our correspondent visited her at the Burns Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Egbo has become a shadow of the beautiful girl she was.

The substance Sulaimon allegedly poured on her had destroyed every visible skin from her chest upwards.

She mumbled to her father, a Taraba State-based businessman, as she could neither see nor speak properly at the time.

When her father, Matthew Egbo, narrated the incident that led to Chika’s state, the story brought tears to his eyes as he lamented that his daughter would never be normal again.

Matthew said, “In March 2011, someone who identified himself as Lekan Sulaimon called me, asking for my daughter’s hand in marriage. We talked a lot and I promised to speak with Chika on the issue.

“My daughter later told me he was the boy she was in love with and said she had resolved to marry him.”

After much discussion, Matthew told Sulaimon to bring his parents for proper introduction, but the suitor said his father was ill and needed to be taken abroad for treatment. He also said his mother was abroad.

Matthew said, “On the June 25 date that we agreed on, Sulaimon brought seven men and four women dressed in Yoruba attire to my hometown, Enugu, where we held the introduction.

“But around November last year, my wife travelled from Taraba to Enugu and Chika told her she was pregnant.”

According to Matthew, Chika told her parents they should not be alarmed since she and Sulaiman had agreed to get married.

Chika was instructed to go to Lagos and tell Sulaiman’s relations about the pregnancy.

But when she got back from Lagos, Chika told her father that she discovered that most of what Sulaiman had told her about his parents were lies.

Matthew explained, “For instance, Chika discovered that Sulaimon’s father was hale and hearty. The father told her he was not aware of any plans by his son to get married.

“She also learnt that the mother was not abroad too. She visited her and she told us the woman received her well and even expressed joy that his son had found someone to marry.

“But after the visit, we heard nothing from neither Sulaimon nor his parents until after my daughter gave birth to a baby girl on May 4.

Our correspondent learnt that Chika had broached the idea of abortion to her parents, as she told them it was apparent that the man she was in love with had lied to her all along.

Matthew forbade her to consider abortion. After the baby was born, Chika was said to have informed Sulaimon, but he gave series of excuses why he could not visit her.

He reportedly told her he was facing some challenges and did not have the wherewithal to take care of the baby at the moment.

After a few months, Chika’s baby girl was weaned and taken to Taraba to live with Matthew and his wife.

The Egbos said they took the decision to take the baby off their daughter’s hands so that she could continue her study.

PUNCH Metro learnt that in November, Sulaimon began to request that he needed to see his baby, but Matthew told him to bring his parents to come and iron things out.

Chika was said to have insisted she did not want to have anything to do with the young man anymore.

But on November 5, Chika travelled to Lagos after Sulaimon had informed her that his mother wanted to see her. The unsuspecting girl left Enugu without informing her parents.

“My phone just rang that day and I was told to come to Lagos because a young man had poured acid on my daughter,” Chika’s father said.

Matthew said the message came as a rude shock since he was not aware his daughter went to Lagos. He explained that the police were the ones who got his number from her phone.

He said,“What I learnt was that when she arrived Igando, Lagos, Sulaimon met her and she demanded that he should take her to his mother who wanted to see her.

“What we gathered from the little she could mumble to us was that Sulaimon went behind a house and as they were about to pick an okada to his mother’s house, he brought out a polythene.

“But when they stopped at a point and Chika thought they were going to proceed to his mother’s house, he just opened a container in the polythene he was carrying and emptied its content on her head.

“She told us when she realised that what Sulaimon poured on her had began eating into her skin, she raised the alarm and called for help.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that passersby and sympathisers, who had been alerted to the young woman’s plight, pursued the fleeing Sulaimon. He was caught and taken to Ikotun Police Station.

“Till now, I still don’t know why he did what he did,” Matthew said.

Divisional Police Officer of Ikotun, Mr. Augustin Akika, confirmed the incident, but said the suspect had been transferred to the state Criminal Investigations Department, Yaba.

Established in 1962 with the aim of training professionals for the newly independent Nigeria, the University of Lagos is a comprehensive university that strives to learn through “knowledge and research.” The University houses nine faculties, and the Medical School is home to three faculties. With an emphasis on research, the University’s faculty has published over 1,700 papers, with the most publications coming out of the medical, science, and engineering faculties.

In celebration of its Golden Jubilee, the University of Lagos will host a three-day research conference and fair with the theme “Research and Innovation for Economic Development in a Globalising Nigeria.”

Notable alumni include Nigerian television actor Francis Agu; publisher and film producer Wale Adenuga; Chairperson of the Nigerian Government’s Economic and Financial Crimes, Farida Mzamber Waziri, and HIV/LGBT activist Bisi Alimi.

The criteria used for the ranking include the following: 1) undergraduate and graduate school reputation among higher education peers; 2) student selectivity for entering undergraduate class; 3) quality and quantity of faculty research, including depth of research facilities and engagement beyond immediate community, and 4) international student ratio—the degree to which institution draws students from outside of its national boundaries.

Based on the criteria used, do you think University of Lagos among all other Universities deserved to be the only Nigerian University on that list?

SHOCKER: Woman Kills Her Two Children To Avoid Losing Custody Battle

Castle Rock, Colorado mom Kelli Murphy was sentenced to two life terms after being charged with the murders of her nine-year-old Liam and six-year-old Madigan, the Examiner reports.

Kelli was reportedly involved in a nasty custody battle with her husband Eric and smothered the two children with pillows to prevent losing the case. The two were supposedly due for a court hearing the day of the murder.

She was considered after her lawyers unsuccessfully argued that she had ingested sleeping pills and vodka, especially after toxicology reports turned up nothing. It took the jury a little over an hour to deliver the verdict.

Eric’s family released a statement upon learning Kelli’s sentence. “This is a sad day for us. We would have preferred celebrating Liam’s 11th birthday today. Instead, we would just like to offer our sincere thanks to everyone involved in this case. Although nothing can make up for the loss of Liam and Madigan or fill the void that is left by their absence, we are thankful that this chapter is now over and we look to God to help lighten our hearts.”

Girl, 15, Beheaded For Refusing Marriage

A teenage girl was beheaded by a relative in northern Afghanistan after she turned down his marriage proposals, according to reports. The victim, named as Gisa, was decapitated with a knife in the Imam Sahib district of Kunduz province on Tuesday, local police said. She is believed to be around 15-years-old

A police spokesman said two men, named as Sadeq and Massoud, had been arrested following the teenage girl’s murder.

The two men are understood to be close relatives of the victim that live in the same village. Local police sources have said the men behind the attack wanted to marry the girl, but their advances had been turned down by victim’s father.

Gisa is understood to have been attacked as she returned to her home in Kulkul village after going out to collect water from a nearby well. Her father told a local news agency he had not wanted his daughter to get married because she was too young.

Afghanistan’s Taliban regime – notorious for its oppression of women in the country – was ousted in 2001, but extreme violence against women is still rife. In 2009, the Elimination of Violence Against Woman law was introduced in Afghanistan, criminalising child marriage, forced marriage, ‘giving away’ a girl or woman to settle a dispute, among other acts of violence against the female population of the ultra-conservative Islamic nation.

But the UN has said there is a ‘long way to go’ before the rights of Afghan women are fully protected. Comprehensive official statistics on the number of incidents of violence against women in the country are difficult to establish, with the majority of cases going unreported.

However, in the year to March 2011, Afghanistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission registered over 2,000 acts of violence against women.

The NATO-led International Security and Assistance Force has given high priority to re-establishing women’s rights that were eradicated under the Taliban as part of its efforts to create a security strategy for Afghanistan.

But with the deadline for international troops to pull out of the country – scheduled for the end of 2014 – looming, activists have warned that the outlook for the female population remains bleak. Human Rights Watch has said women’s rights are increasingly at risk in the run up to the scheduled draw-down of NATO forces, with early and forced marriage, impunity for violence against women and lack of access of justice among the long list of challenges they still face.

BEWARE: Kissing Your Wife In Public In Dubai Can Land You In Jail

When you are in a foreign land, respect their idiosyncrasies and of course their law. How many Nigerians for instance know that you can go to jail for one month if you pucker up to your wife in a restaurant in Dubai? Yeah, that’s right.

So, imagine what will happen if you are caught pants down with a member of the opposite sex in a public place. You are asking for it.

A British woman and Irish man recently accused of engaging in intimate activities in a Dubai taxi have now been sent to jail for three months after which they will be deported.

Rebecca Blake and Conor McRedmond both denied charges of "breach of honour with consent" and committing "an indecent act in a taxi" when they appeared in court last month. They also pleaded guilty to a third charge related to consumption of alcohol in public.

"The court sentenced them to jail for three months and deportation in addition to a fine of 3000 dirhams (R7300) each," their lawyer Shaker al-Shammary said.

Granted that United Arab Emirates is the most liberal of the seven-member UAE federation; granted it wants to be seen as a tourist haven and throws its doors open to all and sundry; still, the country frowns on acts that fly in the face of their Muslim identity.

So, brothers and sisters, be careful.

Ex-Basketball Player, Chinedu Onyeuku, Shot Dead While Trying Robbing A Home In Texas

A former Nigerian national basketball player was shot dead in a botched burglary in Texas before Thanksgiving, it has been revealed.

Chinedu Onyeuku, 29, was trying to break into a home in Plano on November 21 and was shot and killed by the homeowner, police say. Onyeuku had played for the Nigerian team that qualified for this summer’s Olympic Games in London.

According to the Dallas News, Onyeuku and another person allegedly tried to break into a residence on Rio Grande Street in Plano, Texas the night of November 21.

The homeowner told Plano police that he saw ‘multiple people’ approaching the house. The two apparently entered the residence by breaking a glass patio door.

The homeowner shot Onyeuku, killing him instantly. His accomplice ran away without injury. Police are still trying to track the second burglar.

No one inside the home was injured in the burglary. Upon their arrival, EMT workers pronounced him dead at the scene.

It is unclear why Onyeuku and his companion were trying to burglarize the residence.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation posted a statement saying that the 29-year-old athlete played basketball for the team that qualified for the London 2012 Olympics.

However, Onyeuku was not on the Olympic roster and did not actually compete.

The statement reads:

'[His] passion for playing with D’Tigers was deep-seated and he will be greatly missed. The federation joins his family and team mates to mourn a departed son, father, husband and great patriot”.

According to online sports records, Onyeuku was born in the Nigerian capital of Lagos in 1983. He moved to the United States at age six.

He played college basketball at Illinois State University and then went semi-pro for awhile, playing for the Arlington Bulldogs, in the American Basketball Association.

In 2009, he was invited to play for the D’Tigers, a national squad in Nigeria. It also said that Onyeuku lived in Omaha, Nebraska.

Ojukwu ’s Eldest Son Drags Wife Bianca To Court; Claims N100m

Ojukwu ’s Eldest Son Drags Wife Bianca To Court; Claims N100m
Chief Debe Odumegwu Ojukwu, eldest son of the late Biafran warlord, Chief Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Eze Ndigbo Gburugburu) has slammed a N100 million suit on the widow of his father, Bianca and six other members of the family.
He alleged that they prevented him from performing the dust-to-dust rites during the burial of his father, and also prevented him from managing his estate.
Also joined in the legal battle are Ojukwu Transport Limited, Professor Joseph O. Ojukwu, Engineer Emmanuel N. Ojukwu, Mr. Lotanna Ojukwu, Emeka Ojukwu, Mr. Patrick Ojukwu, Mrs. Margret Mogbo, Nee Ojukwu, the Inspector-General of Police and Mr. Ibrahim Mukhtar, former Commissioner of Police Anambra State, now an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG.
In a sworn affidavit to enforce his fundamental human right before a Federal High Court in Lagos, Sourthwest Nigeria filed on his behalf by Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, Chief Debe Ojukwu averred that he was born on 3 August, 1956 to the late Chief Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and his late wife, Margaret.
He said his father was then an Assistant District Officer at Uti, Enugu State and his mother a primary school teacher at Uti. He claimed to be the first and the eldest surviving son of the late Odumegwu Ojukwu. He averred that after his birth, his poor mother was responsible for his welfare and upbringing from her meagre income as a school teacher.
He said he joined the police as a recruit in 1976 and through hard work he went to the University of Nigeria, Enugu, and was later called to the Nigerian Bar in 1986.
However, his promising career in the Nigeria Police was abruptly truncated when Professor Joseph Okwuabudike Ojukwu, Engineer Emmanuel N. Ojukwu, Mr. Lotanna Ojukwu and Mrs. Margret Nugbo invited and begged him to come and manage the business of Ojukwu Transport Limited on their behalf despite the fact that they did not contribute anything to his upbringing.
He quoted some newspaper publications to support his claim that he is the first surviving son of the late Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, which the late Biafran warlord did not contest. The plaintiff said when his father became ill in 2010, he donated blood to him at the University Teaching Hospital, Enugu before he was flown abroad for further treatment.
Thereafter, he visited him in London with his wife and children. But upon the demise of his father on 26 November, 2011, a meeting was convened by Professor Joseph Ojukwu with a view to reaching an amicable settlement as to who should control and manage the personal property owned by Ojukwu Transport which belonged to their grandfather, Sir Louis Ojukwu and the ones belonging to their father, Emeka Ojukwu.
He said there and then, Professor Joseph Ojukwu, Engineer Emmanuel Ojukwu and Lotanna Ojukwu threatened to maim or kill him if he did not cease forthwith from interferring with the management of the property owned by Ojukwu Transport and the late Sir Louis Ojukwu. He added that they also barred him from attending the burial of his late father despite the fact that he spent over N100 million during the funeral.
He said up till today, they are still threatening him on the basis of the circumstances of his birth, claiming that he is not the legitimate son of his late father. This, Chief Debe Ojukwu said, had caused a great distress among his peers and his business partners.
He also urged the court to restrain the defendants and their agents from threatening to kill him, if he did not cease from interferring with the will and personal property of Ojukwu Transport Limited and Sir Louis Ojukwu.
The presiding judge, Justice Okon Abang has adjourned the case till 13 December, 2012 for hearing. Bianca Ojukwu and others mentioned in the case are yet to file their defence.

Pope’s Book On Jesus Challenges Christmas Traditions, Says Christian Calendar Is Fake

Popes Book On Jesus Challenges Christmas Traditions, Says Christian Calendar Is Fake
It’s Christmas, but not as you know it: a new book released this week by Pope Benedict XVI looks at the early life of Jesus – and debunks several myths about how the Nativity unfolded.

In “Jesus of Nazareth – The Infancy Narratives,” the pope says the Christian calendar is actually based on a blunder by a sixth century monk, who Benedict says was several years off in his calculation of Jesus’ birth date.

According to the pope’s research, there is also no evidence in the Gospels that the cattle and other animals traditionally pictured gathered around the manger were actually present.
He also debunks the claim that angels sang at the birth, a staple theme of Christmas carols. The book, which is being published in multiple languages in time for Christmas, is the third in a series by the pontiff. The previous two volumes dealt with Jesus’ adult life and his public ministry.

Alessandro Speciale, Vatican correspondent for the Religion News Service, told CNN the pope was not so much aiming to debunk myths as trying to show that the Jesus depicted in the Gospels is a real historical figure, who walked on earth and talked to people like anyone else.
The pope also looks at scholarly studies of the Bible, some of which have indicated for decades that the traditionally accepted birth date for Jesus is wrong, Speciale said.
But while the book points out that the Gospels do not support the presence of animals at Jesus’ birth – a detail apparently added in later centuries – the pope does not suggest they should be thrown out of the Nativity scene, Speciale said. “The pope is a traditional man and he doesn’t want people at all to change their traditions,” Speciale said.

The 176-page volume, which comprises a brief foreword, four chapters and an epilogue, traces Jesus’ life up to the age of 12, when, according to the Gospels, he was presented by his parents in the Temple in Jerusalem, the Vatican said.
The initial worldwide print run is more than a million copies, it said, with the book released this week across 50 countries in Italian, German, Croatian, French, English, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish.
In the coming months, the book will be translated into 12 more languages for publication in 72 countries in total, the Vatican added. The Vatican quotes Anthony Valle, a professor of theology, as saying the pope has been open to scientific inquiry in his own study of Jesus’ life.
“The pope is not against the historical critical method at all, in fact, he uses it, he appreciates it,” Valle said. He sees the pope as using “both faith and reason” in his efforts to bring the life of Jesus closer.

Monsignor Philip Whitmore, who translated the book into English, said the pontiff used his writing to explore “the inner meaning of the infancy narratives, showing how they pick up on Old Testament themes and develop them in new and unexpected ways.”
“The pope helps us to understand the world where Jesus was born. Caesar brought peace to the Roman Empire, but this tiny child brought something much more wonderful: God’s peace, eternal life, an end to sin and death,” Whitmore added.
“Anyone who’s wondering why Christmas came to be such a great celebration in the West can find the answer right here. The pope explains how the birth of Jesus changed history forever.”

3 SSS Officer’s Children Murdered In Their Mother’s Presence

Gunmen slaughter 3 children of SSS officer •In their mother’s presence •4 killed in Kano riot •10 others killed in Borno, Plateau Boko Haram sect
ELEVEN persons, including three children of the same parents were yesterday killed by suspected members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, at Suleimanti and Lawan wards of Maiduguri.
The father of the three children is said to be a State Security Service officer.
A resident of Sulemanti ward, Audu Jubril told our correspondent that, they started hearing gunshots at about 2:00 a.m. in the area, only to come out of their houses in the morning and be greeted with the news of the killing of little children by suspected sect members.
“They burnt down the house of a retired nurse and killed three children of another man. The situation really calls for serious intervention in Suleimanti because this is not the first time something like this is happening in Suleimanti ward. We have complained several times, we need JTF around this area so that they will chase out these boys carrying guns.
Gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram have killed seven persons in Lawan Bukar ward of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.
Residents of the area said that, the gunmen attacked the residents between 7:45 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Thursday following allegations that the residents earlier arrested two members of the sect, which they handed over to the Joint Task Force Operation Restore Order, when they attacked some residents in the area.
“When the residents caught these boys and handed them over, we were told that they were killed by JTF that is why some of their friends went and organized themselves and came to attack the area this morning,” a resident told Nigerian Tribune.
Men of the JTF have since been drafted to Suleimanti and Lawan Bukar area, but when contacted for confirmation the JTF spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa told our correspondent on phone that, he will send a release to the effect.
Residents of Suleimanti and Lawan Bukar wards of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital have described the killing of the 11 persons as unholy, wicked and barbaric.
A resident of suleimanti ward, Audu Jibril, told Nigerian Tribune that, it is unimaginable that in this era of civilization some people who claimed to be doing the will of Allah go round killing people simply because they belong to another faith.
“The killing of innocent children between the ages of four, seven and twelve in a manner, which for whatever reason are inhuman and barbaric,” he stated.
As people in both Barakin-Ladi and Riyom local government areas of Plateau State continue to live in fear, occasioned by frequent attacks by some unknown gunmen, three people were killed in both areas on Wednesday.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that some assailants at about 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday waylaid some natives along Sho village in Barakin-Ladi local government and shot two of them dead while others fled into the bush just as the gunmen also disappeared immediately after carrying out the act.
It was equally gathered that a similar incident occurred at Rankebot village in the neighbouring Riyom local government at about 5:30 p.m. where a farmer working on his farm was shot at close range and he died before getting to the hospital.
The Media/Information Officer of the Special Task Force in charge of security in the state, Captain Salisu Mustapha, who confirmed the two incidents to Nigerian Tribune said two suspects have been arrested, adding that the command has also commenced full investigation into the two incidents.
It is recalled that some groups of notorious gunmen in Barakin-Ladi local government area of Plateau State on Monday night opened fire on some cows, killing 12 on the spot and wounded another 12.
According to a statement issued by the Special Task Force in charge of security in the state signed by the Media/Information officer of the Force, Captain Salisu Mustapha, Commander of the STF, Major General Henry Ayoola as a result of this summoned an emergency meeting with the Chairmen of Barakin Ladi and his Jos south counterpart along with tradition rulers in the area with the aim of preventing the incident from escalating.
Two more people were again on Thursday, confirmed dead, bringing the death toll to nine, while 50 houses have been burnt in the communal clash that engulfed Agyaragu community in Obi local government area of Nasarawa State, on Wednesday.
The district head of Gidan-Rai, Zhe Meri, who was a displaced person at Agyaragu before the hostility, as a result a the similar crisis that visited his domain few weeks ago, escaped by the whiskers, shortly before the crisis.
The Administrator of Jenkwe Development Area, Mr Wuduyamba Sam Agidi, who led the state Deputy Governor, Honourable Dameshi Luka Barau and other top security chiefs in the state on an assessment tour of the troubled area, confirmed the casualty figure to the Nigerian Tribune.
The palace of the paramount ruler in the area, ‘Zhe Migili’, Dr Ayuba Agwadu, was razed by the people alleged to be militant Ombatse, while the paramount ruler escaped unhurt.
As of the time of filing this report, smoke was still bellowing from some of the affected building, as charred remains of some victims littered the area.
While speaking with newsmen shortly after the assessment, the Deputy governor, Honourable Dameshi described it as barbaric, given the level of devastation of the crisis.
“From the briefing we have got so far from the administrator and security, one cannot really ascertain the real cause of the crisis for now, but I can assure you that we would get to the root of the matter.
“We have taken stock of what has happened and immediately we return to Lafia, we are going into a security meeting to review the situation and come up with a firm decision on the next line of action to checkmate the escalation of the situation,” he added.
As of the time of filing this report, women and children were seen being evacuated in vans from the area for fear of being attacked.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abayomi Akeremale, Director, State Security Service (SSS), Mr Abubakar Bubuche and Secretary to the State Government (SSS), Honourable Hamza Elayo and other government functionaries, with heavy presence of security operatives were part of the tour.
Meanwhile, heavy security operatives have been deployed to Bichi town, a kilometers of about 50 to the ancient city of Kano, over a crisis which erupted on Thursday over allegation of blasphemy of Prophet Mohammed’s name by a tailor who resided in the town, just as a source said unconfirmed number of shops, religious houses were set ablaze during the pandemonium while no fewer than four lives were lost.
This is just as the state police command restated the ban on okada from 6.00 p.m to 6.00 a.m, saying it had been discovered that motorbikes had been used to perpetrate the incessant killing of innocent people in the state.
Speaking with newsmen in Kano, on Thursday, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, however, disclosed that normalcy had returned to the town, though security operatives, police and soldiers were still in the town to maintain law and order.
He said the tailor alleged to have uttered the blasphemy statement had been rescued and taken to a safer place.
“We have held meetings with religious and traditional leaders as well as with stakeholders in the town to speak to people on the need to allow peace to reign,” he said.
While speaking with journalists, the police boss stated that the incessant use of motorcycles to attack innocent citizens in the state had made it necessary for the state security council to convene a meeting on Monday.
It was at the meeting that imposition of ban on the use of motorcycles from 6.00 p.m to 6.00 a.m within the state was enforced, noting that it was necessary, considering the fact that criminals were using motorcycles to wreak havoc in the state.
The police boss noted that “you are all aware that almost all the incidents of killings and robberies in recent times in Kano State were carried out on motorcycles.
“We hereby call on all motorcycle users, including security operatives, to abide by the curfew, as checkpoints have been put in place across the state to check and arrest the violators.”

The Economists Describes Nigeria As The Worst Place To Be Born In The World

Nigeria is known for many things, some good and admittedly, some really bad. In recent times, there have been a number of research reports completed by international organizations and the results have not be favourable for Nigeria.

In October 2012, the African Insurance Organisation ranked Nigeria as the “Kidnap for Ransom Capital of the World” accounting for 25% of Global Kidnappings. In June 2012, the Global Peace Index ranked Nigeria as the sixth most dangerous African country to live in.

Each time such results are released, it is usually followed by debates on various online platforms with many questioning the authenticity of the results.

Yesterday, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a sister company of The Economist magazine released results of its 2013 Where-to-be-born Index. This time, Nigeria is ranked as No. 80 out of 80 countries assessed. Basically making it the WORST country to be born in out of the countries analyzed.

In the “Where-To-Be-Born Index” 2013, Nigeria has the lowest score of 4.74 points, placing us at the 80th position.

It ranks Switzerland as the best country to be born in with 8.22 points. The United States of America and Germany tie in the 16th position with 7.38 points.

Among the African countries on the list, South Africa comes first in the 53rd position with 5.89 points followed by Algeria in the 54th position with 5.86 points.

Woman jailed for dumping baby in latrine

A 25-year-old woman, Ms Toyin Akinbobola, has been sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment for dumping her day-old baby inside a pit toilet at her idanre home, Ondo State.

Akinbobola, who was found guilty by a Chief Magistrate in the Idanre Judicial Division, Mrs. Folashade Aduroja, last Friday dumped the baby in the toilet minutes after giving birth to her on October 18.

Our correspondent learnt that a young boy who wanted to use the toilet moments after Akinbobola carried out the criminal act had drawn the attention of other neighbours to the cry of the baby inside the toilet.

Some of residents who rushed to the scene immediately reported the matter at Olofin Police Station.

The baby was said to have been covered with excreta and maggots when she was removed from the stench by policemen drafted to the scene.

The baby, it was learnt, was taken to Idanre General Hospital from where she was referred to the Mother and Child Hospital in Akure for a comprehensive medical treatment.

Although the baby’s life was saved, medical reports indicated that one of her ears and left eye were not functional again.

The baby was taken to the Motherless babies’ home on Akure-Oba-Ile Road where she is currently being attended to on the directives of the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs.

The police could not arrest the mother of the baby and the person who impregnated her immediately because they had both fled the town.

However, Akinbobola was later sighted at Omifun village where her mother had a farm and was arrested by the police.

She was arraigned on a three-count including an attempted murder contrary to Section 324 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Laws of Ondo State, 1978.

Five witnesses testified in the case which lasted a few weeks.

However, there was a melodrama in the court on Friday when the defence counsel pleaded with the magistrate, before delivering her judgment, to temper justice with mercy because Akinbobola was pregnant again.

The magistrate, who was obviously shocked by the piece of information, asked Akinbobola whether the information was true or not.

In her response, Akinbobola confessed that one of her mother’s labourers on the farm was responsible for the pregnancy.

But the magistrate said Akinbobola was guilty and sentenced her to two and a half years imprisonment, adding that her case would serve as a deterrent to others.

The convict will serve her prison term at Olokuta Prisons, Akure.
